Refinishing your wood flooring for increased visual appeal and value can bring a large profit increase. The good news is that it can be done inexpensively. By following a few simple steps, you can give your flooring a new look without having to spend a lot of money on installation and refinishing.
First, clean the area in which you plan to install your wood flooring. Use only cold water with no harsh chemicals or solvents. Wet floors attract dirt and grime and will only cause problems.
Next, remove any excess pieces of wood that are laying in the open where your wood flooring can be seen. These include boards that may have been installed at an angle or are missing corners. If you have wood blinds or curtains in place, you should remove them so they can also be seen. You will need these areas to work in.
To apply your wood flooring refinishing, use a small brush to sweep out any loose pieces of wood. This is usually the hardest part of the job. With a cloth to help, you can begin working the wood. If the flooring is in a location that allows you to cut around the joints, use this space to gather up any loose pieces.
Place the wood on a table that has a slight incline, such as one in which the floor is made to tilt. Place two or three boards on either side of the table, even with the height of the table. Position your floors against the height of the table, with the face up.
Lay down your first board at the correct depth for your wood flooring. Start sanding the wood away until you have a smooth board that is no more than an inch longer than the other boards. Continue doing this until all of the flooring has been worked down to this depth. Use a soft cloth to finish sand the remaining boards to give them a uniform appearance.
Finally, allow your wood to dry and allow any wet spots to dry before you apply your finish. Dry flooring has no problem standing up to the next step, so you can continue sanding the floor until it looks like you did when you started. You can continue working until you are satisfied with the look, but you should allow it to dry for at least 48 hours before you apply the final finish.
Once you have finished your project, you will find that your wood flooring will sell for a great price. You will also notice a big difference in the way the room feels to you. You will have done it yourself, without spending a lot of money, and without sacrificing the quality of the wood. To know further about wood refinishing project click here.
